The Project
Automotive CGI and VFX for the reveal of BMW’s Concept M8 Gran Coupé.
A high-end automotive production combining extreme location shooting with complex CGI car replacement and VFX.
The film for the BMW Concept M8 Gran Coupé was created as part of the global reveal of BMW’s new luxury performance concept, first presented at the Geneva International Motor Show.
The live-action shoot took place on the frozen plains of Canada under extreme conditions. Because the concept vehicle was not yet available for filming, the production used a stand-in vehicle during the shoot, while the final car was recreated entirely in CGI during post-production.
One of the biggest challenges was that the actual concept vehicle did not yet exist as a production-ready asset. Only limited reference material such as workshop photography and paint samples were available. The car therefore had to be rebuilt digitally with a high level of precision, including the complex flip-flop paint that changes color depending on lighting and viewing angle.
As the shoot progressed, it became clear that significantly more elements had to be replaced than originally planned. Large parts of the ice surface, the environment and the vehicle itself were reconstructed in CGI. The VFX work also included breaking ice simulations, compositing and detailed integration of the digital vehicle into the filmed environment.
As Senior Post & VFX Producer, I supervised the entire post-production pipeline — coordinating the CGI build of the vehicle, VFX production, compositing and final finishing. My role also included close collaboration with BMW and the production teams to ensure that the final visuals accurately represented the design of the concept vehicle.
In parallel, a separate photo production and retouching pipeline was running for the campaign imagery. Aligning the visual language between film and photography was another key aspect of the project.
Despite the technical challenges and tight timeline, the project was successfully delivered and became part of the global launch communication for the BMW Concept M8 Gran Coupé, generating strong online reach and over one million views on BMW’s official YouTube channel alone.
